Following EQAR Success, KAA Steps Toward U.S. Accreditation Recognition
The Kosovo Accreditation Council (KAA) is currently undergoing evaluation to become a CHEA-recognized accrediting organization and a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in the United States.
During a meeting in Washington with CHEA President Nasser H. Paydar, KAA’s Director General, Naim Gashi, presented the council’s work to meet all standards required for recognition in the U.S., following its successful accession last year to the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR).
In a comprehensive and substantive discussion, Director Gashi outlined to President Paydar KAA’s achievements in quality assurance and the internationalization of Kosovo’s higher education system, emphasizing the fulfillment of all standards necessary for CHEA recognition. President Paydar commended KAA for this initiative and for its diligent work in meeting U.S. quality assurance standards.
During his stay in the U.S., Director Gashi also met with CHEA Vice Presidents Michelle Claville and Loretta C. Waldron, Neil Harvison, Chair of the Committee on Recognition, as well as leaders of accrediting agencies from various countries. These meetings took place on the eve of the CHEA Annual Conference in Washington, which was also attended by Nicholas Kent, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education.
Being a CHEA-recognized accrediting organization significantly enhances KAA’s international credibility and legitimacy, positioning it as an accreditation council that operates according to the highest professional standards and best international practices. This recognition strengthens KAA’s independence and public trust in its decisions regarding academic quality.
For the higher education system, KAA’s recognition by CHEA elevates the reputation of universities and programs, facilitates diploma recognition and international collaboration, and promotes a system focused on real quality improvement and student outcomes.
Kosovar students stand to benefit from more internationally recognized degrees, increased opportunities for academic mobility and employment, and greater assurance that their programs meet standards comparable to those in the United States.
CHEA recognition signifies that an accrediting council has undergone a rigorous external evaluation for quality, independence, transparency, and effectiveness. It is a formal certification of credibility and quality, widely acknowledged both in the U.S. and internationally, demonstrating that the council adheres to best academic practices and maintains public accountability for its decisions.
